McConnell Trying To Get Rid Of Trump?

The astute and reticent Senate GOP leader, McConnell, has discreetly conveyed to his party members his desire to distance the party from former President Trump. McConnell perceives Trump as a detriment to the general election and a potential stumbling block for Senate Republican candidates, avoiding even mentioning his name in public conversations.

Two key associates of McConnell, Senate Republican Whip John Thune from South Dakota, and Senator John Cornyn from Texas, have similarly hinted at their preference to see someone other than Trump secure the party's presidential nomination in 2024.

Contrary to the approach of Speaker Kevin McCarthy from California, and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise from Louisiana, who have publicly criticized the Justice Department's actions against Trump, McConnell, Thune, and Cornyn have chosen to quietly observe the unfolding of Trump's legal issues, without overtly coming to his defense.

Their silence on Trump's indictment is interpreted by a former Senate Republican aide as an indirect expression of their desire for Trump to exit the political scene. This individual suggested that the Senate Republican leadership would not be particularly distressed if Trump's current legal battle precipitated his withdrawal from politics.

It's interesting to note that following the release of an indictment against Trump in early April by liberal Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, a number of Republican senators had been vociferously defensive of Trump. This indictment, which included 34 felony counts related to business records fraud, provoked more reaction from these senators than the usually vocal Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer from New York, who refrained from expressing confidence in Bragg when questioned about him in late March.
